Safe Mattresses

Friday, September 25th, 2009

Babies spend almost all of their time sleeping. They probably only wake up to eat and are back to snoozing in no time. But that’s just normal. That’s how babies naturally are. The only thing you should probably worry about is the bed that they’re sleeping in. Is it safe? Are the materials used to produce it safe? Are natural products used? Most importantly, are they safe baby products?

If you already have a mattress, check out the materials used. Chances are, they contain synthetic materials that pose harmful threats to your baby’s safety. If they aren’t green products, you better think twice about using it. Unnecessary side effects and all other harmful toxins are the biggest threats and should be avoided at all costs.

In choosing a mattress for your babies’ crib, go for one that is made from organically grown cotton. Research has proven that it is safer and comfortable. Waterproof is also one criteria you would want to consider. It’s stain resistant and easy to clean. Compared to mattresses out in the market nowadays, always go for one that is phthalate free to avoid having any kind of side effects or disorders in the future. As your child is growing, you only want the best to ensure his full development and enhancement.
Together with other green baby products such as safe sippy cups, baby bottles, baby toys and all other necessary baby stuff, furniture should also be given importance. When it comes to your baby, only eco furniture will do.

Toys for the not-so-big boys

Tuesday, September 15th, 2009

I was out looking for a perfect gift for my brother’s 3 year old son. He’s super cute, adorable and so full of energy you’d wonder where he is getting all of it. I wanted to give him a wonderful toy he can play with, enjoy and have a great time with. But I don’t want to give just any random toy in the mall. I have a specific criterion in mind. I wanted to buy one of those green toys.

This eco-truck caught my attention so bad that the next thing I knew, I’ve already bought it.

This toy is made out of natural products. It was created from a mixture of recycled plastic and reclaimed wood. Reclaimed woods are actually used woods that are taken and re-used for a different purpose. This toy is also paint-free, eliminating harmful chemicals that paints give off. Aside from being one of those green products, it also has the functionality that make it fun and excellent for kids to play with. Because they are not battery-operated, kids will have to manually maneuver and manipulate the truck and make it move according to their own desires. While my nephew is enjoying, his mind is slowly being developed.

I thought finding eco-friendly products would be a tough job. I thought I wouldn’t find nontoxic toys to give as a gift. I was proven wrong with this eco-truck. It tells us that there are still safe baby products out there. Now that is good news.

Conventionally Grown Cotton Is Damaging

Monday, August 3rd, 2009

Organic Cotton BeddingTwo years ago, there were massive toy recalls and concerned parents have begun asking questions. People started thinking whether or not children’s toys are safe, if the same thing goes for children’s beddings and clothes. Lead-laden toys should definitely be out of a child’s reach but it’s time to scrutinize what our children eat, feel, touch and wear in their daily lives. Even cotton is no longer safe for our children and it used to be the natural fiber of choice.

Clothing made of cotton retains harmful toxic residues that cause eczema, rashes and other skin irritations. Organically grown cotton, though, is a different story. Organic cotton bedding and other organic baby clothes are made of pure, natural and breathable fiber.

Nowadays, conventionally grown cotton is one of the most environmentally damaging crops in the world because it results in water pollution and calamitous effects on wildlife. Aside from that it also causes chronic illness in farm workers, since 25 percent of the world’s chemical insecticides are being used. This also results in 25 to75 million agricultural workers suffering from acute pesticide poisoning.

Because insects develop a resistance towards pesticides over time, farmers find ways to modify harsher insect repellents which end up in the air, soil and plants. These chemicals will eventually end up in our children’s bodies if we do not use eco friendly products.
