Back in the day, before fertilizers and pesticides induced crops and children’s toys did not have phthalates and bisphenol A in them, wooden blocks and other toys were literally whittled from trees. Cotton was hand-woven by those who were not able to buy bulk material from a merchant and were dyed with fruits and other natural products used to color things.

Spinning cotton and whittling toys may be gone now, but the organic baby products are now coming back to the modern world. The elimination of plastics is one of the benefits of purchasing organic baby toys. The usual baby toys contain phthalates and this causes many health problems for children like hormone troubles, kidney and liver harm, cancer and asthma. The chemicals used to dye the toys are not worth the health of your baby.

Babies tend to put almost everything in their mouths and with organic baby toys, parents can relax because no harm will come to their child via unhealthy chemicals. Though they cost more than ordinary toys, it is best to invest on natural baby products for the safety of our children.

Conventionally Grown Cotton Is Damaging

People started thinking whether or not children’s toys are safe, if the same thing goes for children’s beddings and clothes. Lead-laden toys should definitely be out of a child’s reach but it’s time to scrutinize what our children eat, feel, touch and wear in their daily lives. Even cotton is no longer safe for our children and it used to be the natural fiber of choice.

Clothing made of cotton retains harmful toxic residues that cause eczema, rashes and other skin irritations. Organically grown cotton, though, is a different story. Organic cotton bedding and other organic baby clothes are made of pure, natural and breathable fiber.

Nowadays, conventionally grown cotton is one of the most environmentally damaging crops in the world because it results in water pollution and calamitous effects on wildlife. Aside from that it also causes chronic illness in farm workers, since 25 percent of the world’s chemical insecticides are being used. This also results in 25 to75 million agricultural workers suffering from acute pesticide poisoning.

Because insects develop a resistance towards pesticides over time, farmers find ways to modify harsher insect repellents which end up in the air, soil and plants. These chemicals will eventually end up in our children’s bodies if we do not use eco friendly products.

When children hold one of their baby toys, oftentimes they put it in their mouth which is perfectly natural and it’s also a way for children to explore the things around them. Many baby toys that are presently in the market, though, may not be the best thing for your child to be playing with. In fact, most of them are harmful to the health of children.

Regular toys that are produced with non-organic fibers are not helping save the environment. Many of these baby toys end up in landfills after children outgrow them. Those who buy regular toys are also promoting the growth of non-organic fibers as well as the spraying of pesticides into the environment. According to research, organic toys also typically biodegrade easier than those that are made from plastics. When commercial cotton and other fibers are being grown, they are exposed to various pesticides and other chemicals to keep the pests away and improve the crop. These chemicals are sprayed onto the cotton and they find their way into the material which can be very harmful to our children whenever they put their toys in their mouth.

PVC, or polyvinyl chloride is found in plastic teethers and there is no such law that states teethers should not be made from PVC. Besides poisonous chemical offgassing, PVC or vinyl contains phthalates. PVC can never be recycled and toys in Europe are not allowed to be made of such.

Toys made from organic, hemp or wool are eco-friendly and generally safer as well as wood with non-toxic finish. These choices are often a safe one and eco-friendly, too.
